THE DA VINCI CODE – Blasphemy hits the screen - By Don Feder
The Da Vinci Code might be subtitled “Religion for Morons” or “Gnosticism Meets The New Age.” It’s fantasy posing as reality. The Sony Pictures film is blasphemous, defames the Catholic Church, and promotes neo-pagan Goddess worship.
Director Ron Howard (who specializes in visual candy) assures us that Opie’s opus will be true to the novel – a pretentious, overwritten piece of trash that makes Bridget Jones’s Diary look like one of the 100 Greatest Books Ever Written. The plot of Dan Brown’s mega-best seller (45 million copies sold) goes like this: Jesus married Mary Magdalene, who bore his children, who became the Merovingian monarchs of France, whose descendants are running around Europe today – being chased by Opus Dei or Mormon missionaries or Martians or someone. Again, according to The Code, The Catholic Church has for centuries concealed the truth about Jesus to maintain its power. Mary Magdalene represents the “sacred feminine” – which supposedly predates monotheism – and which wicked patriarchalists have spent millennia trying to suppress, the better to deny man’s sexual nature and subjugate women. The book (and presumably the film) even has a ritualistic orgy, where communicants dance with orbs and the grand master of the book’s mysterious order gets frisky with a plump, middle-aged lady. Brown may have achieved the impossible - devised a type of mumbo-jumbo that makes “healing” crystals seem serious.
Orthodox Christians are rightly offended by The Code’s plot, denying as it does the divinity of Jesus and his mission. People are free to believe, or not believe, in Jesus. Jews and Christians have been debating the identity of the Messiah, what God requires of us and how salvation may be achieved for almost 2,000 years. But to turn the life of a man almost a billion people on this planet worship into a soap opera beggars the term insensitive.
At least Christians can take comfort in the fact that their’s isn’t the only faith maligned and misrepresented by Brown’s book. Where did Brown get his understanding of ancient Judaism – from that noted Kabbalist, Madonna? Did he discover Jewish polytheism among the documents hidden away in the Templars’ secret crypt, along with Jesus’ marriage license? As a Goddess-worshipping, neo-pagan, Brown seeks to reverse the Bible’s process of taming man’s erotic nature (by channeling it to fidelity and family), once again divorcing the sexual from the spiritual – freeing man’s hedonistic urges from Judeo-Christian constraints. That Brown has so many admirers among Hollywood libertines is unsurprising.
But why all the fuss? After all, it’s only a movie, right? The novelist/philosopher Ayn Rand was once asked why she primarily wrote fiction, instead of works of philosophy. Rand explained that it’s far easier to convey ideas through fiction than non-fiction – witness Dante’s The Divine Comedy, witness Uncle Tom’s Cabin, witness Ben-Hur, The Screwtape Letters and To Kill a Mockingbird . Novels and films aren’t footnoted. The author or screenwriter can create a thoroughly convincing universe that powerfully projects his message. From The Birth of a Nation and Triumph of The Will to Thelma and Louise and Brokeback Mountain, films have told us how to think about the world around us.Most movies present the world according to Hollywood (and the word became flesh – lots of flesh) – that the sex act is good in and of itself, that people should follow their feelings (which invariably will lead them to right conduct and happiness), that prayer is like throwing a penny in a wishing well, that God is within us, that God is love, that God makes no demands of us and that the followers of traditional religion are a bunch of uptight, puritanical, hypocritical killjoys.Debunking Christianity – which is The Da Vinci Code’s mission – advances this worldview. All too many people read novels or see films and think they’re experiencing reality. Their understanding of the complicated history of settlers and Indians comes from Dances With Wolves. They are informed about the crusades by Kingdom of Heaven. Their understanding of the theory of global warming comes from The Day After Tomorrow. According to a Barna Group survey, 24% of those who read The Da Vinci Code said it aided their “personal spiritual growth and understanding.” In other words, one in four of its readers believe the book’s thesis (as opposed to its storyline) is true. Our “personal spiritual growth” isn’t aided by what we believe to be a lie.
The best response to The Da Vinci Code – besides derisive laughter – is a boycott. Resist the urge to determine just how bad it is by buying a ticket. You’ll only be rewarding the perpetrators – perhaps encouraging The Da Vinci Code: Part II, wherein Dan Brown reveals that Jesus was really married to Lazarus.

Ok, this guy seriously needs a hobby...why on earth he feels that boycotting the movie will stop its message in its tracks is beyond me...its an absolute success (i mean...didnt you see how many people turned up to the premier last night)?
And besides, i know that ill get some stick from this, but i am actually looking forward to seeing this movie (even as a confirmed Christian). In all truth, i dont really see whats wrong with one man (ie: Dan Browne) making a story like this. After all, each of us has our own place with God...so what difference will a movie make to the way we love and worship him?
You guys think my spiritual beliefs are wrong (and supposingly "devil worshipping") but that doesnt mean to say that dont love God any less than you do. And its the same with Dan Browne in my opinion...but i also think that its important not to get too swept up with the hype that this movie has created. Just because Dan Browne can create a best seller (and a hell of a movie)...doesnt mean to say that we should add his story to the New Testament...its just an opinion, and its only a story. If some poeple choose to believe this story, than who are we to criticise? At the end of the day, everyone (including myself) has their own beliefs to the true meaning of Christianity...but all our variations have 3 things in common: love thy neighbour, peace amongst all men, and love for God. As long as we all still believe in these basic principles, then there's not a movie on earth that could damage the testaments of Christinity.

Hey Christian union, I'm a just as upset as you are about this trash. I personaly will not be going to see this movie, I did how ever go see all the Star Wars movies. Which put this Christian redneck to thinking. In the past 30 yrs. we (world) have had numerous books and movies turned into religions. Star Wars (the force is within you) E.T. Beings from another planet and so on. these seemed to have sliped in the back door on beleivers, this book and movie however hits us head on up front. No we can't stop this trash from showing and we can't stop people from seeing it, what I feel we can do is have answers from Gods' word for them when they come asking. And they will come asking. What I think this book and movie will do is draw a line in the sand with those who believe and cause those who are still searching to ask a believer what they think. Just some thoughts from a Redneck hangin out with Jesus. I found your site off of The stevens'Blog were all together at beulahbaptistonline.org come check us out.

Another key element to the christian faith is that God came to earth as man and suffered for us and died for us and rose again afterwards. This crap Dan Browne is speaking casts that into doubt. That is why all good christians are opposed to it. It is attacking the main belief of christianity. i.e. Gods divinity. He did not come to earth get with a prostitute and have Kids.
This is your king he's talking about. He's undermining your key beliefs as a christian!!!!
A boycott of the film by the 1 billion people who believe the words of the bible would have a massive affect. Otherwise we are condoning what the book sxays.
Also if people believe that this is what the catholic church, opus dei and jews ged up to it is going to fuel ridicule and persecution. Not for me I'm afraid.

Im sorry, but the film is not trash. Ive discussed this on my conservative website, and everyone who has commented has said that it the book is only fiction...it is not to be followed as gospel. Like i said, just because Dan Brwon has an opinion about Jesus's life, doesnt mean to say that hes any less of a christian than us.

Yeah but Skinner he's underminming the very principals of christianity. He can't be a christian unless you Believe Jesus rose again. Otherwise how could we be forgiven? It is not a view on christianity its an attack.
You and I are intellegent enough to Know its not true but some young Kid yet to experience christ sees the film?! and his parents are atheists. This is all he can beleive!!

"some young Kid yet to experience christ sees the film?! and his parents are atheists. This is all he can beleive!!"
In all truth, you and I are both intelligent enough to know that if you are a young kid "yet to experience Christ"...you start learning about Christianity with the Bible......not some fictional best-seller that just hit the reading charts!

Yeah but he doesn't know that. Your ahem.. argument is fundamentally flawed. Kids will go and read the book (been out for 3 years) or see the film and think this is what this bloke Jesus was like!!
I didn't really listen in church till I was about 15 and discovered my evangelistic powers, so some kids read this book or see the film might see no point because the man we all worship seems pretty ordinary!!!He is anything but ordinary.
Also the last book in revelations says "he who adds to the words in this book God will add to his plagues in hell". Since Dan's Interpretation or maligning (both are synonomous) is doing this the bastard will rot as his tyreny and blasphemy deserves.

How very Christian of you to say so! Im sure Dan Brown will appreciate that.
But the point im making is simple. Everyone knows that if you want to start learning about Christ...you start with the bible...period!
You dont go on the internet and look up web pages on Jesus, you dont go to friends and find out off them, and you most certainly dont go to a recent Hollywood blockbuster to find out either...you simply start with the Bible. This argument that kids might watch the Da Vinci code and get the wrong idea is crap. Even when i was a little ponty pope at the age of 8, i didnt know much about Jesus or God, but i still knew that the only way to find out about them was through the bible (which is what i did). I didnt go to cinema's to find out the answer there.
And even if you continue to believe your argument is correct, then does that mean kids will eventually see such recent films as "The Omen", "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and "The Devils Rejects" and believe them to be true? Surely not......people would be worshipping Satan every second of the day if that was the case!

What is key hear I believe that many of you feel threatened by Dan Brown's work, which indicates fear. What are you afraid of? If God's word is true, it doesn't matter what Dan Brown says. The fact that you're giving this issue the time of day only goes to prove that in fact you doubt your own beliefs as Dan Brown's fictitious account proves to be just as likely as the Bible's fictitous account.
Both great books, entertaining reads.
